Every March, New Hampshire sugarhouses open their doors and invite visitors in to watch sap transform into golden syrup. It’s one of the most authentic New England experiences you can have — and lucky for our guests, some of the best sugarhouses in the state are just a short drive from Sunapee. Visitors can witness the magic of sugaring firsthand, often participating in the process, tasting fresh syrup right from the source, and learning about the history and culture surrounding this treasured tradition. Here’s where to go this year to make the most of your Maple Month experience.
Sunapee
Harding Hill Farm
One of the most beloved stops in the area, Harding Hill Farm throws open its sugarhouse doors every weekend throughout March. This year they’ll be showing off a brand-new evaporator, which allows for more efficient syrup production, and Scott Brothers Kitchen returns with an outdoor breakfast setup — including maple pulled pork for the lunch crowd. Heated tent, plenty of seating, and that irresistible maple steam rolling out of the sugarhouse create a festive atmosphere. Children and adults alike can enjoy the sights and sounds of the sugaring process while savoring delicious treats that incorporate this iconic flavor.
Newport
Page Hill Farm
A small, family-run operation with 600 taps and a whole lot of heart. When Page Hill Farm is open and boiling, they put a sign out on Route 10 south of Newport — so keep your eyes peeled. Stop in for fresh syrup, sugar, candies, and maple cream.
Bradford
Will-A-Way Maples
Wood-fired and wonderfully old-school — you’ll smell this sugarhouse before you see it. Will-A-Way Maples offers tours, tastings, and a real look at the sugaring process. They plan to boil both days during Maple Weekend and at least one weekend day through the rest of March. One tip from the farmers themselves: things get muddy out here, so bring your boots.
Warner
Kearsarge Gore Farm
Call ahead before making the trip out — the folks at Kearsarge Gore Farm love visitors but want to make sure someone’s home to greet you. You can also place a phone order for pickup, or order online for shipping if you want to stock your pantry well beyond maple season.
Beaver Meadowbrook Farm Sugar House
Visitors are welcome during maple season — just call ahead to confirm they’re boiling before you head over. A classic New Hampshire sugarhouse experience right on Route 103.
New London Area
Cochran Sugar House
New London makes a perfect home base for a maple road trip, and Cochran Sugar House in neighboring North Sutton is well worth the short drive. With 800 taps and a welcoming setup for visitors, it’s a great spot for families and first-time sugarhouse visitors alike.
